The Good

Spirit in the Road

On most occasions, it is Ian who sees the dead, and not me. I’ve had many experiences throughout my life when I have seen paranormal phenomena with my own eyes, whether they be shadows, entities or physical environmental manipulation from spirits. But this time, what I was seeing was completely solid and as real as any human being would be to you or me.

On an evening when Ian joined me for my delivery shift, we had picked up an order at a local restaurant and had driven several miles to make the dropoff. GPS had brought me to the customer’s residence, which was along a quiet, tree-lined street. It was dark, with moderate fog in the atmosphere from moisture accumulated from heavy rain the day before. Volumetric cones of light from streetlamps created soft, amber circles along the street and sidewalks as far as we could see, until they became faint halos swallowed by the billowing mist.

As I slowed the speed of our vehicle while approaching the customer home to my left, I could see a man walking toward us in the middle of the road, emerging from the distant fog slowly and at a steady pace. He was wearing a hoodie with the hood pulled up around his face, slacks or track pants, sneakers, and had his hands in the front pockets of the pullover. Out of an abundance of caution, which I always do when I exit the vehicle with the key in the ignition while Ian rides with me, I told Ian to lock the door as I made my way up the concrete steps to the customer’s front door, phone in hand to log the delivery and let the guest know I made the dropoff. After photographing the order and wishing the customer a wonderful evening via a text in the delivery app, I turned and started back down the steps to our car along the curb below. Immediately I noticed that the man I had seen walking in the center of the road was now gone; a quick turn of my head up and down the street revealed no one, which left me unsettled.

When Ian unlocked the door and I slipped back into the driver’s seat, he asked me, “Did you see that guy disappear?” I paused for a moment and looked at my husband, unsure of what he meant. He then continued. “Right as that dude got into the beams of the headlights, directly in front of the car, he just vanished!”

“Wow!” I exclaimed, “he was a ghost.” I was amazed that this time, I saw exactly what Ian does when he sees the dead. An exciting and unexpected way to finish a delivery, to say the least…
